LUCILE OURS LEWIS, 86, of 1158 Luther Drive, Hagerstown, Maryland, died on Monday, January 31, 2005 at the Ravenwood Lutheran Village in Hagerstown. Born October 28, 1918 in Bass, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Statton Ray and Myrtle Bean Ours. She was employed with Fairchild Industries. She was an instructor with the Maryland Medical Secretarial School, and was the founder of The Legal Department. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. She was the member of - the National Society of Southern Dames; the Maryland Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, serving as President from 1994 to 1996; the Order of Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Grand Matron; the DAR – Maryland State Registrar from 1988 to 1991; the Maryland State Scholarship Chairman from 1950 to 1952; the ex-charter Regent, Antietam Chapter; the DAR Antietam Chapter, Scholarship Chairman from 1991 to 1994; the Daughters of the Union Veterans and Past State President; the Women's Club; Past-State President of the United Daughters of the Confederacy; and the Past-State President of the Daughters of 1812. She received her Law Degree from Blackstone in Chicago, Illinois. She formed the Legal Department at the Hagerstown Business College; taught law there and retired from there. She was the Grand President of Alpha Iota Sorority, and in 1959 she established a chapter at Hagerstown Business College. In 1975, she wrote the history of the Sorority, of which portions were printed in the Encyclopedia of Education. She is survived by her husband of sixty-seven years, Vernon J. Lewis, Sr.; one son, Vernon J. Lewis, Jr., and his wife, Bonnie V. Lewis, of Hagerstown; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and one special cousin, Nellie Leatherman of Old Fields, West Virginia. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Statton Ray Ours, Jr., and Fred Bean Ours. Graveside services will be held at 12:00 p. m. Thursday at the Mine Road Baptist Church Cemetery, 111 Post Oak Drive, Spotsylvania, Virginia. Rev. James M. Eure, Jr. will officiate. Friends may call at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown on Wednesday from 10:00 a. m. to 8:00 p. m.
