Captain John C. Smith, 97, of Williamsport, MD passed away Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at his home. John was born on April 3, 1923 in Sharpsburg, MD. He was the son of the late William Anderson and Alice Wilson Smith. John retired in 1964 as the Commanding Officer of the 357th light aircraft maintenance unit in Hagerstown. Additionally, he retired Fairchild Republic and Lockheed Aircraft. During his time there, he was a Production Manager of many aircrafts, specifically the A10, C5 A and B, and SF340 models. He was a member of the Pegasus Club at Fairchild Aircraft. He was also an avid sports fan, following the Baltimore Colts/Orioles. He was a lifelong member of both Trinity Lutheran Church in Hagerstown and Zion Lutheran Church in Williamsport. Capt. John (as he was referred to by all who knew him and worked for him) was a proud, hard-working soldier and family man. He married Mary Catherine Myers of Hagerstown, MD in 1945. Shortly thereafter, he proudly served his country in Okinawa, Japan during WWII. This past May, the couple celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary. He is survived by his wife, Mary C. Smith; three sons, Michael W. Smith and wife, Sofia L. Smith, John (Rob) Smith and wife, Joy M. Smith, and David W. Smith; two granddaughters, Lindsey M. Smith, and Morgan E. Mitchell and husband Dustin A. Mitchell; and two great-granddaughters, Marley M. Mitchell and Skylar E. Mitchell. He is preceded in death by his parents. The funeral service will be held at 1pm on Tuesday, October 20, 2020, at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD. Rev. Dr. David Eisenhuth will officiate. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. Graveside military honors provided by Morris Frock Post #42, The American Legion. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, October 19, 2020, from 6-8pm.
