Harold "Taldy" Jones, 92, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at Julia Manor Nursing Home while recovering from a broken hip. Born June 13, 1924 in Hagerstown, MD, he was the son of the late Edgar Harold Jones and Mary Elizabeth (Landers) Jones. He was the youngest of seven children and the last surviving member of his birth family. He was nicknamed "Taldy" by his beloved father. He grew up at 356 South Cannon Avenue in Hagerstown. Taldy married his sweetheart, Lavenia May Ford, November 22, 1947, and was married 67 years until her death on February 24, 2015. As a young boy, he worked as a messenger boy for Western Union, delivering telegrams, as well as singing telegrams, on his bicycle. Taldy worked at Pangborn Corp. for 45 years as a machinist and later an equipment expeditor. He retired from Pangborn in 1987. Taldy was a World War II veteran serving in 17th Airborne, F Company, 193rd Glider Infantry, and at the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Purple Heart Medal after being wounded in action from stepping on a land mine. Taldy was confirmed into Christ's Reformed Church on April 5, 1936, and has remained a member his entire life, singing in the choir for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Gad Abouts Square Dance Club and enjoyed dancing for 39 years. He was a member of Elk's Lodge #378. Taldy designed and built the family home which he moved into in 1952 and lived in for 64 years. He enjoyed camping and pulled his camper well into his upper 80's. He was 88 years old the last time he pulled his camper to Cowan's Gap State Park in Pennsylvania for a 14 day trip. He and his wife also toured the United States by camper. Taldy was devoted to his family. He loved to garden and planted a huge garden each year to grow all the vegetables the family would need for the whole year. He also planted flower gardens, and fruit trees over the years, which supplied much of the family's fruit. He also loved to feed and watch the birds, especially the humming birds at this favorite camping spot in Cowan's Gap State Park. Taldy was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Lavenia May Ford Jones. He is survived by his five children, Jennifer Jill Amy and husband, Les, of Stoney Point, NY, Ginger Kay Griffith of Halfway, MD, Jan Lynn Staeblein and husband, Thomas, of Fairplay, MD, Jeffery Jay Jones of Martinsburg, WV, and Joel Dana Jones and wife, Cyndi, of Smithsburg, MD; eight grandchildren, Jonathan Thomas Staeblein, Justin Emory Nigh, Brittany Megan Spring and husband, Jason, Ashley Erin Amy and Finance, Daniel Schiaffo, Jade Nichole Jones, Jessica "Jessy" Lauren Gordon and husband, Kaleb, Karin Nicole Mills Poffenberger and husband, Cody, and Lindsey Rachelle Jones; seven great grandchildren, Justyce Amiah Nigh, Kaydence Marie Thomas, Julianna Brielle Nigh, Tailyn Reigh Thomas, Prince Ameir Nigh, Jeffery Kyle Spring, and Tanner Lee Braxton Thomas. In addition to his spouse, parents and siblings, he was preceded in death by one daughter-in-law, Tammy Lou Johnson Jones. Services will be held at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD on Thursday, August 4, 2016 at 11am. The Rev. Gregg Messerole will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by Joint Veterans Council of Washington County. The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 3, 2016, from 7 to 9pm at the funeral home.
