CLARENCE BARNHART, 73, of Maugansville, MD, died on Monday, August 22, 2005 at the home of his daughter in Luray, VA, after a several month long battle with cancer. Born September 24, 1931 in Clear Spring, MD, he was the son of the late Henry Clinton and Gertrude Viola Timmons Barnhart. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1949 through 1969. He served in the Korean War and spent thirty-three months (12/3/50-9/l/53) in the Korean War POW camps (Death Valley camp for 6 weeks, Camp #5 for 2 years, and then the last several months in Camp #4). After a short period as a security guard for the Pinkerton Company, he worked for the City of Hagerstown from 1970 to 1991. After retiring in 1991, he traveled extensively around the world and attended Korean War POW reunions. He was Past President of the City of Hagerstown Union #1540; a member of the Amvets Post 10; a member and Past Historian of the Last Man's Club; and a member of the Korean War Veterans Association. He enjoyed playing pool on several leagues including many competitions. He was a member of the American Pool Association. He was preceded in death on September 18, 1989 by his wife, Norma A. Springer Barnhart. They met in March of 1954 and were later married on December 31, 1954. He is survived by three daughters and their families, Therese B. Leigh of Bridgewater, VA, and her husband, William, and their daughter, Kathleen; Nora L. Dofflemyer of Luray, VA, and her husband, Jerry, and their son, Nathan; and Lynette Y. Crull of Harrisonburg, VA, and her husband, David, and their daughter, Denae. He is also survived by a sister, Clara Norris of Hagerstown; a brother, Paul Barnhart, Sr. of Front Royal, VA; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Ethel Mull , Julia Eichelberger, and Leona Shackelford; and three brothers, Karl Barnhart, Lawrence Barnhart, and Raymond Barnhart. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p. m. Thursday at the MINNICH FUNERAL HOME, 415 East Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown. Rev. Gary Zook of the North Side Mennonite Church will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. Military honors will conducted at the graveside by the Maryland National Guard. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p. m.
